It's official.
Anthropic — the company behind the Claude AI model — confidentially filed its IPO prospectus with the SEC on Monday.
This is the first formal step toward what could be one of the largest stock market debuts in history.
A confidential filing means the documents are reviewed by SEC staff privately — before any financials become public. The company gets feedback from regulators and makes revisions before the S-1 is released to investors.
Apple, Google, and SpaceX all used this same process.
In its statement, Anthropic said the filing "gives us the option to go public" after the SEC completes its review. The timing will "depend on market conditions and other factors."

Here's what we know.
Anthropic closed a funding round last week that valued the company at $965 billion — topping OpenAI's $852 billion valuation from March. That makes Anthropic the highest-valued private AI company in the world.
The revenue story is the part that caught my eye. The company says its revenue run rate hit $47 billion in May, up from $10 billion in annual revenue last year. That growth has been driven largely by Claude's automated coding tools, which enterprise customers are adopting fast.
It's not clear yet whether the company is profitable. We won't know until the public S-1 is released.
The competition angle is what makes today interesting.
Anthropic is now ahead of OpenAI, which is still readying its own confidential filing. SpaceX has already filed and starts its roadshow this week, with a debut expected June 12.
That puts all three of the biggest potential IPOs of the decade — SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI — moving toward the public markets at the same time.
Prior reports suggested that Anthropic could go public as early as October. Nothing is locked in yet.
