Anthropic just surprised everyone.
The maker of Claude closed a $65 billion funding round at a $965 billion valuation. That makes it more valuable than OpenAI with a $852 billion valuation.
That valuation makes this 4-year-old company worth more than Exxon, Walmart and JP Morgan.

A year ago, Anthropic was the underdog. OpenAI had ChatGPT, hundreds of millions of users, and a massive head start.
Anthropic took a different path. Instead of chasing chatbot users, it went after business customers — especially coding automation through Claude Code.
That bet is paying off.
The company's revenue run-rate crossed $47 billion earlier this month. At the end of last year, it was $9 billion. The Wall Street Journal reports that figure grew 80-fold in the first quarter.
Anthropic sales are expected to his $10.9 billion this quarter. And operating profits are expected to be $559 million.
The pace of this company’s growth is simply astounding.
PitchBook says this is the fastest valuation growth in venture-capital history. Anthropic reached $965 billion roughly three years after launching its first product.
The round was led by Altimeter, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia. Additional investors included Micron (Nasdaq: MU), Samsung, and SK hynix — the companies that actually make the memory and chips AI depends on.
When your suppliers are also your investors, that tells you something about where they think this is headed.
There's also a SpaceX connection. Anthropic struck a deal worth $45 billion to access computing power from SpaceX's Colossus data center.
Both Anthropic and OpenAI are expected to file IPO paperwork this year. The WSJ reports bankers and lawyers largely expect Anthropic to list first — investors may favor its enterprise focus and shorter path to profitability.
